“Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving.”
-Albert Einstein
Let’s simplify our yoga and reflect the movement of leaves falling on this first day of autumn. One of my favorite things to do is just drop my chin to my chest, round my shoulders forward and slowly roll down to earth. This is best done with knees bent and any amount of wiggling and swaying that feels good to you.
What yoga pose is this? It’s not any one pose, but a flirting with the pose known as uttanasana. I invite you to approach uttanasana, sway in and out of it, retreat from it only to roll back into it, and just generally explore it with small shifts of your weight. It can be so liberating, to step away from that effort to achieve the perfect yoga pose and just ask yourself, “What feels good now? How can I wriggle around in this posture in a way that makes it more of a dance?”
Yoga is for the mind as well as the body, so let yourself imagine roots coming down through your feet into the earth to anchor you onto your spot. Pretend that your arms and torso are branches swaying in a cool autumn wind. Then, let’s make a silent wish or prayer or intention to stay as grounded yet flexible as we can while we cross over from summer to autumn.
Happy Equinox, Mamas!
