Today as my daughter was napping I finally found a moment to throw my yoga mat down and stretch. I chose uttanasana for my inversion today. This is one of my favorite inversions. If you bend your knees a little bit and really let your head and arms hang, it has a decompressing effect on your upper body.
I’m one of those unusual people that has always been able to touch the ground. It seems that one of the number one complaints I’ve had from people who are hesitant to try yoga is that, “I can’t touch my toes,” to which I reply, “Isn’t that why you need yoga?”
But really, it’s not about touching your toes or the ground. Bend your knees if there is too much tension in your back or legs. Relax your arms, shoulders, and head. Let them hang. Think of your legs as the trunk of a willow tree and your upper body as the dangling branches blowing in the breeze. More anatomical details on this posture in future posts.
